From Eira Makepeace: George Dalton died in Sep 1926 at Durban, Natal, Africa aged 92 years and 2 months, giving him a birth date in July 1834.
General Notes: There was a story that he refused to make thousands of boots for the British in WW1, as he would have to compromise on quality! See CD Storrar's memoirs, Part 1 for description as an old man.

DALTON G Date: 19260917 Section: Methodist Block B1 Grave No 109. DALTON O Date: 19360816 Section: Methodist Block B1 109.
Died at 17 Ebor Avenue Durban aged 92. Note in baptismal entry in parish register for Bedern Chapel gives his father as cabinetmaker. Literally around the corner from his parents' address at 25 Goodramgate. Olive STARR marriage record in Cory MS 19 174 Vol 1. The 1851 census gives him aged 16 as a saddler' apprentice to George Douglass, born Sheriff Hutton, uncle by marriage, in Sheriff Hutton, 10 miles north north east of York. He worked as a Saddler.

Notes from Eira Makepeace:
General Notes: Martha died aged 23, 9 days after her child Martha was born. She had been ill for several months. Father was a painter and glazier, and trustee of the Wesleyan school in Sheriff Hutton.

General Notes: George describes his wife dying when his baby was 9 days old so this child is presumed dead very young and before his marriage to Mary Brown.

General Notes: Never married but lived with parents. Was a companion to her stepmother Olive.
Called 'Janie'. Left estate of £124 to her sister-in-law, Lily Dalton (Wife of George Londesborough Dalton who comes from his Father's 3rd marriage). The executor was Daniel Lamont Stewart, married to Eva Dalton, GL's daughter. Buried with parents in West St Cemetery, Methodist Block B1 86.

Rose Milcah Dalton, born in Durban in 1867, died in Durban in 1867.
(Notes : Death notice in Natal Witness August 1867 gives death "on 9th inst Ross MILCAH, the beloved child of George and Mary Dalton, aged 7 months." There was a mistake made in the tracnsription of this notice originally, ie the Ross was actually Rose, a girl, so I have made the necessary corrections on this site, and to the Gedcom file also.)

General Notes: William and Elizabeth STARR who arrived on the King William in Jan 1850 with Eliza.D, Mercy and William.
Hence, they were NOT born in South Africa. I do not know where yet.
Marriage certificate from Cory Library, Grahamstown give her age as 20 and she married in 22nd or 23rd December 1871 so birth year of 1851. Death Notice gives her as 83 years 10 months at death so which gives a birth year of October 1852. She was born at Cato Ridge. Address at death given as 336a Moore Road, house of daughter Fanny Evelyne Tunmer

George was a Saddler, who took his Nephew George Dalton (Born July 1834 at Bedern, York) as his Apprentice. They were living in Sheriff Hutton at the time of the 1851 Census. Though his wife Ann was visiting with her Father at the time of the 1851 Census - Eira Makepeace.

Notes from Eira Makepeace:
St Crux baptism transcript at the City of York archives for his grandson Christopher born 1810 gives Thomas as a butcher, deceased, late of the Shambles; other refs to a butcher in his claim to be a freeman of the City of York where his father Thomas is also named a butcher. This Thomas claimed his freemanship by patrimony 21st September 1767. There are three Thomas Dalton butchers free in the City of York archives’ list but cannot make a connection yet.
Rachel was second wife as noted in parish register for births of children including William, flax dresser born 1783.
Marriage bonds show him aged 37.)
