Notes

James Herbert Wells-1

James Herbert was a Soldier in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Private No 37263. He was in the Absent Voters list for the Electoral Rolls 1918-1919 (Voter no. 6634), and was living at 11 Kidd's Terrace, Layerthorpe, York, when not staioned elsewhere.
!In the Spring of 1920 according to the Electoral Registers the following relatives were living at 11 Kidd's Terrace:

James Herbert Wells,
Ellen Ann Wells (James Herbert's Mother??),
Vine Leaf,

Two years later the arrangement was the same, though in the place of Vine Leaf was Albert H Helps.

In 1945, James and his wife had moved to 18 East Parade, where he ran the Heworth Constitutional club for any years. I believe he was the longest serving steward of a Club in York. He also owned 16, East Parade.

From the Yorkshire evenging Press: 25 Sep 1963
James Herbert Wells of 49, Chestnut Grove, New Earswick, York, died 24 Sep 1963, aged 65 years. He is the dearly beloved Brother of Charlotte and Violet and Brother in law of Harry and Tick.

Francis James Fairclough-9

He was a Waiter.

William Duce-24

This family may have been realted to this William also....
!1851 Census, Penley's Grove st, Parish of St Maurice, York:

Duce, Elizabeth, dau, 6, Scholar, Born York
Duce, John, son, 4, Scholar, Born York
Duce, Edward, son, 2, Scholar, Born York
Duce, Thomas, son 1 month, Born York
Might William be the Brother of Robert??

Robert Dewse-37

there are two possible candidates for Robert's birth: There are no other Robert's born from 1820 to 1790, so they must have moved in to York. Either way, Robert's work is done.
14 Jul 1811 Healaugh by Tadcaster. Parents are Thomas Duce and Mary Carey.
Or
5 Apr 1818 Catton Nr York. Parents are William Duce and Ann.......
!1851 Census:Vincent Court, Parish of St Maurice, York:
Duce, Robert, Head, Married, 33, Bricklayer, Born Stamford Bridge (Was either Blind, Deaf, or Dumb).
Duce, Jane, Wife, Married, 36, Born York

Duce, Ann, 10, Scholar, Born York
Duce, John, 6, At home, Born York
Duce, Robert, 3, At home, Born York
Duce, MAry, 1, At Home, Born York

I had put down in my notes the name of a girl called Jane after John's, but then I crossed it out. I assume I got it wrong....Also, I have not got Elizabeth on the IGI, maybe her name was spelt differently??
Catton near York, can be found on the map as either Low Catton or High Catton, and both are a mile or so away from Stamford Bridge, so I am going for the second option above.

William Duce-35

I need to look up this family on the 1881 Census, and also try and find the marriage certificate, so that I can determine who William's father was, unless he shows up as living with them on the 1881 Census.THen I will know whether these are the wife and children, of William.

Mary Duce-33

I assume that Mary must have died at some point, as there is a daughter called Mary to Robert and Jane aged 1 year old in the 1851 Census. I do not yet know if she died before the age of 8 years - 28 Jan 2002.
