ROBERT: May 20, 1898: Nottawa--had stone foundation built under his new residence. (Ref Collingwood Bulletin of that date). 1901 Census, birth date given as 12 Jun 1866. Died of pneumonia, heart attack at 7 Ravenal St., Toronto, the home of his son, Harold. From Collingwood Bulletin: The late Mr. Jackson was born at Duntroon, June 13, 1965. When only a child he moved with his parents the late Mr. and Mrs. R. Jackson, to Nottawa where he received his early education in the public school. When a young man he was employed for several years as a weaver and spinner in Nottawa woollen mills; later he was employed in the lumber mills at Spanish River until the time of his marriage, November 25, 1896 to Alice Margaret Bulmer, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bulmer, Sunnidale, and since has resided at Nottawa with the exception of two or three years spent in Collingwood. In the spring of 1906 he built their present home in the beautiful maple grove on Nottawa sideroad, where they resided until last fall, when he with Mrs. Jackson went to spend the winter with their son in Toronto.
RAJ Note: "Actually a beech grove." Still in existence, 2000.ALICE MARGARET BULMER: Date of marriage confirmed Collingwood Bulletin of 13 Nov 1896. Alice sang in church choirs, more than once joining two churches so could sing am & pm. Sang solos in younger years. After husband died, visited family in Nottawasaga Twp in summer months for several years. At same time, she continued singing whenever she could, in at least two choirs in "West Toronto". Avid gardener, had beautiful garden at home in Nottawa. Daughters were married in that garden. Grandson BK#1 (Robert Arthur Jackson) spent summers 1932 to 1935 in Nottawa. [Grandson #1 was Blake Ogilvie. Blake & BK#1, Bob, spent much time together, 1932-35, often walking the 3 miles twice daily to and from Collingwood to Nottawa. They played in Grandpa Jackson's beech grove and in "the bush" on uncleared western lot of farm. The "farm" was mainly a market garden, about 22.5 acres in all.
Alice Margaret was known as "Allie" to her husband, and as "Aunt Allie" to family members. She visited as many of them as she could after being widowed, wrote letters, exchanged photos with nephews and nieces. For many years before her death, she read books, newspaper articles, items of interest to her husband, Robert, every evening after he had gone to bed. In return, my grandfather got up early every morning to rekindle wood fire in big kitchen stove in kitchen of their home in Nottawa.
The kitchen in the farmhouse was in the unfinished, uninsulated back of the house. The "attic" above had a floor of unpainted planks that used to sag severely as you walked across the room. The view of Collingwood and Georgian Bay,three miles away, through window in the "attic" was spectacular. Beautiful clear blue water, like a relief map in detail to be seen towards Wasaga.
