I have a feeling that Vine was nicknamed Tick. see reference to his brother in law James Herbert WElls' obituary in his notes.
From the Yorkshire Evening Press Charlotte Ann Leaf died 1 Nov 1975 in hospital aged 79 years, of 22, Moore Ave, York, wife of the late vine leaf, dear mother and grandmother. Service at St Hilda's, thursday 6 Nov at 10 am. Cremation at Middlethorpe, York.
Albert is a Twin :)
!He also was a Postman later in his life.
An aside, I found one Alma Helps living at 20 Burton Stone Lane, York, in 1948. I do not have any idea how he/she is related though.
Albert Henry lived at 11, Kidds Terrace in 1918. He was in the army at the time, though I have not made a note of which regiment or his number. His Brother in law, James Herbert Wells also lived there, so it is likely that the Wells family lived there.
I think Albert henry was more commonly known as Harry.
6, Iver Close, Acomb
James Herbert was a Soldier in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Private No 37263. He was in the Absent Voters list for the Electoral Rolls 1918-1919 (Voter no. 6634), and was living at 11 Kidd's Terrace, Layerthorpe, York, when not staioned elsewhere.
!In the Spring of 1920 according to the Electoral Registers the following relatives were living at 11 Kidd's Terrace:James Herbert Wells,
Ellen Ann Wells (James Herbert's Mother??),
Vine Leaf,Two years later the arrangement was the same, though in the place of Vine Leaf was Albert H Helps.
In 1945, James and his wife had moved to 18 East Parade, where he ran the Heworth Constitutional club for any years. I believe he was the longest serving steward of a Club in York. He also owned 16, East Parade.
From the Yorkshire evenging Press: 25 Sep 1963
James Herbert Wells of 49, Chestnut Grove, New Earswick, York, died 24 Sep 1963, aged 65 years. He is the dearly beloved Brother of Charlotte and Violet and Brother in law of Harry and Tick.

This Couple lived at the following addresses in York:
All In the Parish of St Mary Bishophill Jnr.
Duke St 1874 - 1875
10 Maurice Place 1875 - 1878
38 St Pauls Terrace 1879 - 1885
1 Windsor St 1885 - 1890
5 Denton Terrace 1891 - 1906In the 1881 Census, there is an Alice Leaf aged 59, unmarried, lodging with James nad his family. She was Annuitant, and born at Thornton, Yorkshire.
In the 1891 Census, they were living at 9, Windsor St, York, they must have moved away to 5, Denton Terrace soon after. Their daughter Rose was not listed in the 1891 Census, but I cannot find her listed in the Cemetery Records, so I do not know if she had died, or just been elsewhere when the Enumerator came around.
In 1877 A Walter Leaf lived at Railway Terrace, Same Parish. There was no James Leaf, so this Walter could be his father. 25 Nov 1995
James bought a family grave at the York Cemetary (Grave No. 2601). His
!reference in the cemetary records is 80504.
Margaret was the major influence with the eccentric christian names which
!were given to her children. So much so that a Mr David C Poole decided to
!look up more about the family and discovered all these wonderful names!!
!He very nicely gave me a copy of all the information that he had, which
!was more than I had at the time.
!Margaret was 94 years old when she died!. She was buried in the York !Cemetary in grave No. 2601, (Ref 116290) which is her husbands grave. For Reference: Mr David C Poole, 19 Penyghent Ave, York YO3 0QH
Basil was buried at the York Cemetary in the grave which his father had
!bought, No. 2601. Reference No. 55414.
I am not certain if this second Basil belongs to this family, as in the Cmetery records it states that his father a J Leaf, was a Travellor, which does not fit with James' Occupation of Engine Driver/Wheelwright. A Birth of Death Certificate would solve the query.
His parents were living at 48 Titchbourne St, Belgrave, Leicester at the time of his birth.
!At the time of the 1881 Census, Arthur was a Bobbin Turner.

Could the following be the birth registry entry for Florence??
Florence Louisa Helps, 4th quarter Leicester 1901 Vol 7a Page 192??
it would fit well with the gap between the other children.
Possible christening:
4 Aug 1789 at Acomb, son of William and Ann
I have gone back to 1775, and this is the only one in York, even though it was a little village back then.
There was one in Strensall too. but that is all. Will have to find more info about John, such as his marriage etc, to be able to be more accurate with his date of birth.
As a note for future reference, I found the birth of a Sarah P. Helps Registered in Leicester, in the 1st Quarter 1866.
!10 May 2001 Have looked on the Family History Catalogue, and it appears that the Parish of St Margaret, Leicester has been extracted up to 1836. Hence just missing my William Helps.

at the time of the 1881 Census George was a General Labourer.
Burial No:94646
!Grave No:26
!He was a Publican.
!He ran the Ebor Vaults Pub from 26 Nov 1926 to 6 Jan 1930. Then Alice Wells, whom I assume would be his Wife Alice, ran the Pub until 1st Nov 1948. Then a Leslie Stanley Wells ran it until its closure on the 25 Jan 1951. This Leslie may be a son of George and Alice, but I do not yet know.Ebor Vaults, Church St,

An email from Liz Taylor:Hi!
I contacted you a long while back in relation to some research that I
was
doing into the Kettlestring family. I have just taken this research up
again (after producing some family of my own!) and have just come across
your amazing website. It's the first big breakthrough I've had so
please
excuse the enthusiasm.I have some info about George Donaldson Wells that might be of some
interest. He was married to Alice Kettlestring who was my Great Aunt.
My father vaguely remembers visiting them when they ran the "Ebor Vaults"
pub in York. At the time he thinks that George was dying of consumption.
He says that they had two children Elizabeth and Leslie who were slightly
older than him (he was born in 1924), which look like it might tie up with
your idea of the Leslie who carried on the pub being related. He also
recalls that there had been another child who had died which looks like it could
be the Elsie that you record. He thinks that she had curvature of the spine.Alice's father William Kettlestring was a cabinet maker which might
explain how Alice and George met as you mention that George's father was a
furniture seller. The 1881 census had William Kettlestring and his family living
at 4 Wilkinson's Yard in York which I believe was in or near Walmgate.Sorry that this is all fairly anecdotal. If info on the Kettlestrings is of
any use to you please get in touch though I realise it might be of less
direct relevance to you. I don't have much but what I have you are
welcome to.~I'm quite a novice to this and research is a little hindered by a young
family so if I may can I contact you if I need any advice on where to
get info? Fortunately I now live in Harrogate which helps with researching inYork.I hope this is helpful
She was buried near the North Wall of the Cemetry, Row 1, Gravestone No.103.
~19 Jun 2004 Jenny was Proxy for the baptism and confirmation :)
The marriage certificate of his daughter Annie says he was deceased by 1868, but on the 1861 census, Annie is listed with her mother and a Samuel Collins, who must be her stepfather, so William probably died no later than Dec 1860 or so.
On the 1851 census, it becomes even more bizarre:
William is still not there, but it appears that his parents are. There is James Harkness aged 71, Jane aged 59, Violet Harkness Listed as unmarried, aged 28, with her two daughters listed as daughters and not grandaughters, as it is James that is the head, and then Samuel Collins! All are said to be born in Carlisle too, even though a later census declares Annie to have been born in Newcastle. So Was Violet really a harkness to begin with, and never married a William Harkness, or did two harknesses marry?, or was it just a mistake not to have put violet as a daughter in law, and her daughters as grandaughters?..............
A possible death for William 4th Quarter 1855 registered at Carlisle, Vol 10b Page 223 No age at death given.
A possible death in light of the apparent lack of William on the 1851 census is in Chester Le Street in the 3rd quarter 1848 Vol 24 Page 21. No age given Chester Le Street is 8 miles south of newcastle, so it would be a good possiblility
It appears as if Jane was an illegitimate child, and having been given the name of harkness iat her christening, did Violet Harkness marry William Harkness? Were they related prior to marriage?
