From the 1901 Census:
36517275 25333981York Smith Samuel Male 56 1845 Primitive Minister Lincoln Marsh Chapel
I am not certain that samuel is even a member of this family, but there is mention in the family stories of a Samuel Smith being a Methodist minister who helped to lay one of the foundation stones in the Methodist church in Monk Bar Rd, York. There is written on one of the foundation stones the following:
This stone laid by Rev S. Smith on behalf of the village societies of the York 1st Circuit Nov 20 1901.
Is this my Samuel???
his birth year is a complete guess, and could be completyely wrong!
~back in about 1994 when was looking into this, i noted down the following phone numbers to contact people about how to find out more information:
The minister at the time was a Rev Keith A. Redd 01904 768 326
The keyholder to the building could be phoned on 09104 658 746.
I never got around to phoning.
There was a Samuel Smith living at 59, Bootham, York, and appears to have owned a shop at 9, Davygate, York in 1857.
In 1864 there was a Samuel Smith living in Clifton, York.
In 1877 there was a Samuel Smith living in Bootham, York.
Are these my Samuel Smith??Probably not if Samuel was born in 1852 as I have currently estimated.
a possible marriage is in the 3rd quarter 1873 at Wayland, Norfolk. Her name is either Harriet Musk or Hariet Elizabeth Minns. The Harriet i have is not listed as having a middle name, but that does not mean it is not so.
There is a George Minns Smith born in Watton, Norfolk, which matches with the census, and hence the mother would be easy to identify. Just need to eliminate Harriet Musk.
1851 Census HO 107 piece 1817 Folio 369 Page 17
1861 Census RG 9 Piece 1223 Folio 37 Page 19
But there is also a Harriet Minns still unmarried in 1891 when she should have been married and listed as having the same birth place of wymondham as the two references above. Wymondham is nearly 13 miles west of Wymondham, so is this the right person???
In 1891 George M Smith was a Tea Merchant's Clerk
There is a birth of a George Minns Smith in 3rd quarter 1874 at Wayland,Vol 4b page 247
Wayland has Watton as a sub district, so it must be close by. This middle name of Minns would suggest that Harriet Elizabeth Minns is the wife od Samuel Smith and not Harriet Musk.
In 1891 Bertram Samuel Smith was a Scholar
In 1901 Bertram was a Printers labourer.

On the 1901 Census Fanny is listed as Fanny Harrison Smith, so I am assuming for now that Harrison is her maiden name, until I can proove otherwise. 17 Jun 2005

7 Nov 2004 Jenny tried to find the birth of Annie based on her supposedly been born in Heywood, Lancashire, which would have come under either Prestwich Registry District or Ashton Under Lyme, but nothing has shown up during 1856 or 1855.
I have a note which suggests that Annie and her fmaily may have lived in St Helen's for a while before making their way to York. I also have a note to say that a John Garnett may have lived at Sligo, N Ireland for a few years after Annie's birth, which contradicts the possible birth of Annie at Heywood, Lancashire, which is what is stated in one of the Census's taken. I do not know who John Garnett is, or what connection he has with the family, blood or otherwise.
Issac was in the Kings Own Light Infantry. He died in the 1st World War, at Boulogne, France.
Jacob Daniel or James or Jim Smith-403
Well this person has provided some interesting times!
!On the 1891 census there is no Jacob Daniel Smith in the family, yet in the records of St Wilfred's Church one can find his christening.
!I have half a picture postcard of a James Smith sent to my Great Great Grandmother from Queensland, Australia which is signed '..your loving son Jim.' The Publisher of the POstcard was A W Outhwaite, Of Market St, York.
!Recently I have been reminded that Jacob is Latin for James. Hence Jacob Daniel and James are the same perosn! :)
!I have a note written towards the end of 1994 which states that he went to a fairground and ended up in Australia. As far as I know he died there.
!
he had been ill for quite some time before he died.
Could there also have been a Sydney Smith?? There was a Sydney Smith living at 5 Peaseholme Green, though I am not sure at what time, probably 1860's - 80's

The family alluded to in the next line does appeaar to match, though the father is quite a bit older than I had originally thought.
!A possible family can be found on the 1861 census RG9 Piece 3553 Folio 59 Page 11 This is my family :)
!Martin was a Carter.
Dr R Malcolm Henry called and said that he has a marriage of a Michael Welch, who may be the brother of my Martin Welch. he married Jane? Melville in 1856. His father is James Welch. Melville is one of his wifes ancestral names, so I will have to look into this some more.1851 census: a Martin welch was lodging in long close lane, st peter le willows, walmgate, york. 22 yrs old
1861 census for york: try walmgate first, but not st denys.
try st georges catholic church for martins children.
!I have a note of a Christening at St Wilfred's Roman Catholic Church which may be related to this family. Indeed it may be this family.Jacob Welch son of Martin Welch and Helen Welch Nee McCairn. Born 26 Feb 1857, Baptised 1 Mar 1857.
This does seem like it could be Annie's brother!!! I do believe he is !!!!!The family tradition about how this family came to leave Ireland, is that Martin was a moonshiner, who was making quite a bit of money, and word came to him by a friend that the police were after him, so he left with his family and came over to England. I do not know where exactly they went, but they probably came in via Liverpool. I have found on 3 different censuses that Annie was born in either Ireland, York, or Heywood, Lancashire. I have not been able to find a birth certificate for her in York, so Heywood seems to be the next likely choice.
There are two other entries in the records of the Parish of St Wilfred's regarding WELCH families.
Thomas Welch or Walsh, son of Patrick and Mary Walsh Nee Vasey. Born 20 Nov 1858 Baptised 5 Dec 1858.
Thomas Welch, son of Patrick and Mary Welch nee Vasey. Born 21 Dec 1859 Baptised 4 Jan 1860.
!From the 1891 Census:
!I have found a note dated 21 Oct 1995, 12:30 pm, about who was living at 6 Layerthorpe Buildings from information available in the Electroal rolls:1900-1909 A Thomas Welch lived there
1920-1926 A Jane Welch lived there.
1927-1933 A Martin Welch lived there. In 1935 the houses did not exist.
Jane lived at 6, Layerthorpe Biuldings, York on the 15 May 1920 (Electoral Rolls). she was listed as the Occupier. Also living there were Martin Welch, and Thomas Welch. I do not know if this Martin is her Father, or possibly her Brother. I do not know if she had a Brother called Martin though, but it may be possible.
I believe that the family below is the wrong one, as the Father's name does not match with what I have written down from the marriage certificate. In the 1891 census the same family below are to be found, only neither of the parents are listed. William the son becomes the head of the household.
Buried in York Cemetery:
Grave No:112154
Burial No:6541 Park CHe may have been born in Tidworth....I have looked on the 1881 Census for Lewis, but I cannot find him anywhere in the British Isles; so either he was not born before the Census was taken, or he and his family were not in the country at the time.
8 Jul 2004:It appears that Lewis is actually from Kent! Here is the 1881 Census for that particular family:
