I have just found two possible Christenings for Thomas:
Birth 17 Jan 1661 at Coxwold, son of Michael Nicholson. and Frances Pickring married 1656 at St Micahel New Malton.
or
Christening 28 dec 1661 at coxwold, son of Richard Nicholson. and Janet Cairt who married 27 feb 1660 at Coxwold.
soneone has done Richard's work as abt 1636 of coxwold, on account of his marriage to Janet. The parish of Coxwold goes back to 1583, but there are no christenings of any richards in Coxwold back to 1605.
Which is the correct one?
This family lived in Coxwold between the years 1861 and 1881, and possibly longer.
!1871 Census, Coxwold:
Salmon, William, Head, Mar, 43, Ag Labourer, Born Coxwold
Salmon, Hannah, Wife, Mar, 42, Born Seanton (Looked like Scruton)
Salmon, Elizabeth, dau, 9, Scholar, Born Coxwold
Salmon, Mary Jane, 7, scholar, Born Coxwold1881 Census, Coxwold:
Salmon, William, Head, Mar, 53, Ag Labourer, Born Scruton (got him mixed up with his wife)
Salmon, Hannah, Wife, MAr, 52, Born Coxwold
Salmon, Mary Jane, Dau, Unm, 17, Born Oulston
A possible set of parents for Thomas are:
Christopher Salmon
!and Sarah Kettlewell.
They married 1 May 1794 at Brafferton. Here are the Children I have found so far:
1. John SALMON - International Genealogical Index Gender: M Christening: 19 Mar 1795 Alne, Yorkshire, England 2. Thomas SALMON - International Genealogical Index Gender: M Christening: 20 Jun 1796 Alne, Yorkshire, England 3. Sarah SALMON - International Genealogical Index Gender: F Christening: 8 Oct 1797 Alne, Yorkshire, England 4. Jane SALMON - International Genealogical Index Gender: F Christening: 31 Aug 1800 Alne, Yorkshire, England
![A possible christening of Christopher is at Coxwold to Thomas Salmon 17 feb 1761. Looking at the christening for Thomas the son, to see if any extra family history information is given would be quite usefiul in confirming this hypothesis. (I have not yet done this 4 July 2002)
A Thomas Salmon married Ann White at Coxwold 6 Mar 1760.
There are two possible people this could be Thomas son of William and Dorothy C 1742, or Thomas son of Thomas C 8 Apr 1734, who I do not appear to have in my file. This last Thomas, the Father could be Thomas Sawman b 1696 at Kilburn, and married to Anne Borten Dec 1718 at Kilburn??
This seems more likely now I have checked it over again. Still need to look at the parish registers though!
Need to check out the possible number of children to each marriage, to make a more accurate guess on when the marriage took place, before ascribing parentage. It does seem likely however that Thomas Salmon who married Frances Cooper has probably had his work done before it was done in 1991.]
Her parents are Michael Cooper and Frances Robson. Frances was 37 when she died.
There are two Michael Coopers born within 7 years of each other.
Michael son of Francis Cooper Chr 14 mar 1756, at Kilburn.
Michael son of William Cooper Chr 12 May 1763 at Felixkirk.
I am not sure which is the most likely of th two to be correct, but possible the latter one, as none of the male children I have found so far have been called Francis.
Her father is John Robson
Need to look at his christening to see if it will give 2 or more generations of his ancestry, which will help to resolve when his grandfather George Hornby married. There are two possibilities at the moment:
1) George who had Rachel as a daughter was Chr 27 Oct 1731 at Coxwold and married 21 Dec 1747 at Felixkirk to Elizabeth Storey, which does not seem likely.
and whose father is George Hornby Chr 4 jun 1700 at Coxwold son of Thomas Hornbie.
2) George who had Rachel as a daughter is the George son of Thomas Chr 4 JUn 1700 who married 10 Dec 1730 at Coxwold to Jane Maw, and had both George (1731) and Rachel (1752).
here is a list of children who may have come from such a marriage:
1. George HORNBIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: M Christening: 27 Oct 1731 Coxwold, Yorkshire, England
2. Jno. HORNBIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: M Christening: 22 May 1735 Coxwold, Yorkshire, England
3. William HORNBIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: M Christening: 5 Dec 1737 Coxwold, Yorkshire, England
4. Rachel HORNBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: F Christening: 2 Jul 1752 Coxwold, Yorkshire, England
5. Robert HORNBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: M Christening: 21 May 1755 Coxwold, Yorkshire, England
There are many other Hornby's being born in the parish of Easingwold at the same time, and this parish is only a few miles away, so this is causing some confusion.
there is a couple George Hornby and Ann Mills who married in 1729 at Easingwold, and they have 6 children:
William HORNBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: M Christening: 8 Feb 1730 Easingwold, Yorkshire, England
2. Mary HORNBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: F Christening: 25 Jun 1731 Easingwold, Yorkshire, England
3. Geo. HORNBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: M Christening: 24 Nov 1732 Easingwold, Yorkshire, England
4. Ann HORNBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: F Christening: 22 Dec 1736 Easingwold, Yorkshire, England
5. John HORNBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: M Christening: 1 Jan 1739 Easingwold, Yorkshire, England
6. Thomas HORNBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: M Christening: 7 Aug 1742 Easingwold, Yorkshire, England
George the Father does not appear to have been Christened in Easingwold, so his birth date has been estimated at about 1704 of Easingwold.
There are two possible Christenings elsewhere though:
George son of Thomas 4 Jun 1700 at Coxwold
and
George son of William 24 Jun 1706 at Thirsk. Not sure which is the correct one. If the former, then it makes it even harder to fit the families above in to the situation, unless we have the first one, with George marrying at age 16.
